How Much Does Yoga Teacher Training Cost in the US? Tuition, Fees, and Hidden Costs

Most 200-hour yoga teacher trainings in the US cost a few thousand dollars, and tuition isn't the whole bill. This guide uses published prices from real US programs, Yoga Alliance's current fee pages, and federal pay data, all checked on October 14, 2026. Schools change prices often, so confirm any figure before you pay.

If you're still deciding whether to teach at all, start with our guide on how to become a yoga instructor.

Quick answer

  • 200-hour, local studio: In our sample, regular tuition was $3,000 to $3,900. Early-bird prices went as low as $2,200.
  • 200-hour, residential or retreat-based: $2,400 to $5,400 or more with lodging in our sample, plus travel.
  • 200-hour, self-paced online: One program was listed at $1,637 and on sale for $347.
  • 300-hour: $3,500 to $4,500 for live programs in our sample.
  • Yoga Alliance: $50 one-time application fee plus $65 a year for an RYT, or $115 the first year (Yoga Alliance).
  • Registration isn't a license. Studios and gyms set their own hiring requirements.

What a 200-hour training costs

A 200-hour training is the usual starting point. Yoga Alliance's own training page says schools set their own tuition, "ranging from $1,500 to $5,000+, depending on program length, location, and format" (Yoga Alliance). We didn't find a published survey of US tuition from Yoga Alliance or any independent group. To ground the ranges, we checked the published prices of nine US 200-hour programs on October 14, 2026. This is a sample, not a survey of the market.

Program Format Published price Notes
CorePower Yoga (multiple states) In studio or online, 9 weeks From $3,099 Style is power yoga. Payment plans through Klarna and Shop Pay

Down Under School of Yoga, Brookline, MA In person or livestream, 10 weekends $3,700 ($3,300 for a summer intensive) Early-bird discounts of $150 to $400. Trainings are "final sale." Required classes not covered
The Yoga Common, New York, NY Weekends in person plus a 4-day retreat $3,500 to $3,900 tuition, plus a $1,050 to $1,450 retreat fee Total $4,550 to $5,350. Transportation to the retreat not included
Kripalu, Stockbridge, MA On campus (two 12-day sessions) or live online On campus: $2,808 to $2,856 "plus required accommodations." Online: $3,008 Lowest on-campus room rate is $109 a night on weekdays and $129 on weekends. Meals are included
Sivananda Yoga Farm, Grass Valley, CA 4-week residential immersion $2,400 (bring your own tent) to $5,400 (private cabin), lodging included Required books, mat, and notebook bought separately. Certificate covers hatha yoga
YogaRenew Self-paced online with live Zoom calls Listed at $1,637; on sale for $347 when we checked 30-day full refund. The sale was marked as ending October 16

What the sample shows:

  • Local studio programs clustered at $3,000 to $3,900 at full price. Early-bird and member rates brought several down to $2,200 to $2,800.
  • Residential programs can cost less in tuition and more overall. Kripalu's on-campus tuition is under $2,900, but two 12-day sessions mean roughly 24 nights of required lodging. At the lowest posted rate, that's at least $2,600 more by our math. Confirm the exact total with Kripalu. Sivananda's price includes lodging, so it ranges with the room you pick.
  • Self-paced online is the cheapest by far. Compare how many live hours with a trainer you actually get.
  • Price doesn't tell you style. Most trainings are built around one approach. A vinyasa program prepares you to teach very different classes than an Iyengar or Kundalini program. If you're unsure, our comparisons of hatha vs. vinyasa and yin vs. restorative can help you choose a direction.

What a 300-hour training costs

A 300-hour training builds on a 200-hour one. Together they qualify you to apply for the RYT 500, if both schools are registered with Yoga Alliance (Yoga Alliance RYT standards). We checked five 300-hour programs on October 14, 2026:

Program Format Published price
Yoga Shanti, Sag Harbor, NY Online, in person, or both $4,100; $3,500 for returning students
Trailside Yoga and Yoga Story, Fayetteville, AR In person, two weekends a month for six months $4,200 early bird, $4,500 full, $4,000 for their own 200-hour graduates
Samadhi Yoga Sangha, Denver, CO Monthly weekend modules $4,500
CorePower Yoga Online, 6 months From $3,999
YogaRenew Self-paced online Listed at $1,749; on sale for $444

Live programs in our sample ran $3,500 to $4,500 before discounts. Some schools, like Kripalu, sell their 300-hour training in modules over several years and don't post a single total price (Kripalu).

Online, hybrid, or in person

Yoga Alliance allows fully online training. Its current standards for schools say Registered Yoga Schools "can offer training programs in multiple formats, including 100% in-person, 100% distance learning, or a mix of both" (Standards for RYS Credentials). The same document requires at least 15% of hours to be synchronous, meaning trainers and students meet live at the same time:

  • RYS 200: 30 live hours
  • RYS 300: 45 live hours
  • RYS 500: 75 live hours

Online pros: lower tuition, no travel or lodging, you can keep your job, and recorded material you can rewatch.

Online cons: less hands-on feedback, harder to practice teaching a real room, and quality varies widely. A self-paced program can meet the minimum with 30 live hours out of 200.

Hybrid programs, like Citizen Yoga's and Yoga District's in our sample, put the lectures online and keep practice teaching in person. Immersions compress training into a few weeks. Yoga Alliance caps instruction at 14 hours a day (Yoga Alliance), so a month-long immersion can be very full days.

Yoga Alliance fees and requirements

Yoga Alliance is a nonprofit membership organization that grants credentials to schools and teachers who meet its standards. Graduating from a Registered Yoga School (RYS) doesn't register you automatically. You apply and pay separately.

Teacher fees (checked October 14, 2026):

Fee Amount
RYT application fee (one time, non-refundable) $50
Annual membership dues $65
First-year total $115
Experienced Teacher Pathway application fee (for teachers who didn't attend an RYS) $85 ($150 first year)
Upgrading your designation (for example, RYT 200 to RYT 500) $50 one time
Adding the YACEP designation (for E-RYTs who teach continuing education) $20 a year

Sources: Standards for RYT Credentials and RYT Application Guide. New members who change their mind can cancel within 30 days and get their dues back, minus the application fee (Yoga Alliance refund policy).

Schools pay more: a one-time $400 application fee and $240 a year per credential (Yoga Alliance). Some of that cost is likely built into tuition.

Credential requirements:

Credential Training Teaching required
RYT 200 One 200-hour program at an RYS 200. Shorter trainings can't be combined None
RYT 500 500 hours at an RYS 500, or 200 hours plus 300 hours at an RYS 300 At least 100 hours since training
E-RYT 200 200 hours at an RYS 200 At least 1,000 hours, over at least two years since training
E-RYT 500 500 hours, as for RYT 500 2,000 hours over at least four years: 1,500 after the 200-hour level and 500 after the 300-hour level

Source: Standards for RYT Credentials.

Continuing education: All RYTs currently must complete 75 hours every three years: 45 hours of teaching and 30 hours of training (RYT Application Guide). Members get access to "600+ hours" of included CE content, so it doesn't have to cost extra.

Changes coming in 2027. Yoga Alliance has announced that it is splitting membership from the credential and adding an assessment (Yoga Alliance, credential path). What it has published so far:

  • The teacher assessment opens in January 2027. It has 40 questions on topics including teaching, ethics, safety, and inclusion. "A passing score is 75%, and you'll have two attempts."
  • If you miss the December 31, 2027 deadline, your "credential will lapse, and your $65 annual fee will cover your membership only." Getting the credential back costs a $150 recertification fee covering three years.
  • Current RYTs and E-RYTs keep the credential and membership at the current rate for three years, through the 2029 renewal.
  • From the 2030 cycle, continuing education changes to 30 hours every three years for RYTs and 40 hours for E-RYTs.
  • New RYTs will still need 200 hours of training.

The pages we read didn't say what the assessment costs teachers or exactly how new graduates register once the change takes effect. If you'll finish training in 2027, ask your school and Yoga Alliance how the transition applies to you.

Is registration legally required? Yoga Alliance calls the RYT a "credential." None of its pages we checked call it a license or say you need it to teach. Its own policy says its credentials "do not certify members to practice or advertise as yoga therapists" (Yoga Alliance). The Bureau of Labor Statistics says employers of fitness instructors "usually prefer to hire those with certification, but requirements vary by facility" (BLS). Many studios ask for an RYT 200 in job postings, so check what employers near you require. To register later, you'll generally need to have trained at an RYS.

Costs beyond tuition

These are the costs that most often show up after you've paid the deposit:

  • Application fees and deposits. Yoga District charges a $275 application fee that doesn't count toward tuition. Deposits in our sample ran $250 to $1,000 and were usually non-refundable.
  • Card processing fees. Yoga District adds 5% to card payments.
  • Required books. Day Yoga lists six required books, and Yoga District and Sivananda also require books not included in tuition. Ask for the reading list early. Used copies can cut the cost.
  • Required classes. Down Under School of Yoga requires 20 classes to graduate, and tuition doesn't cover them (trainees get discounted passes). Others, such as Day Yoga and Citizen Yoga, include unlimited classes during training.
  • Mat and props. Immersions such as Sivananda's ask you to bring or buy your own mat.
  • Travel, lodging, and meals. For residential programs, this can equal or exceed tuition. Kripalu's on-campus format requires paid accommodations, and The Yoga Common's retreat fee doesn't include transportation.
  • Yoga Alliance fees. $115 the first year, then $65 a year, if you choose to register.
  • Liability insurance. On Philadelphia Insurance Companies' yoga instructor page, the total is $125 a year for part-time instructors (under six hours a week) and $185 a year for full-time. Both include a $50 Risk Purchasing Group charge, with $2 million per occurrence and $4 million aggregate limits (PHLY). Ask each studio what coverage it requires.
  • CPR and first aid. The BLS says most fitness trainers and instructors "need certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid" as well as AED use (BLS). Some studio job postings require it, and some say only "preferred." The American Red Cross's online-only adult CPR/AED course is $37, but the Red Cross says it "does not meet OSHA requirements for workplace certification" (American Red Cross). If an employer needs an in-person or blended certificate, prices vary by location.
  • Continuing education. Specialty trainings, such as prenatal or children's yoga, are a separate cost if you want them later.

A rough first-year budget for a local studio program, using figures from this article:

Item Low High
Tuition (our sample, local studios) $2,200 $3,900
Yoga Alliance (first year) $0 if you don't register $115
Liability insurance (PHLY) $125 $185
CPR (Red Cross online) $0 if not required $37 or more
Books, classes, fees Varies by program Varies by program

How to vet a program before you pay

Questions to ask:

  1. Is the school a current Registered Yoga School for this program? Check the Yoga Alliance directory yourself rather than relying on a logo.
  2. Who are the lead trainers, and how many hours will they teach? Yoga Alliance requires RYS 200 lead trainers to hold the E-RYT 500 and to teach at least 150 of the 200 hours (Standards for RYS Credentials). Ask for names, then look them up.
  3. How many hours are live, and how many are self-study? For a 300-hour program, Yoga Alliance requires 270 contact hours. Non-contact hours are learning "without a faculty member present," such as reading and written assignments (same source).
  4. How much practice teaching will I do, and will I get feedback?
  5. What exactly does tuition include? Manual, books, classes, lodging, meals, and any retreat.
  6. What is the refund and withdrawal policy, in writing?
  7. What happens if I miss sessions? Ask about make-ups and deadlines.
  8. How many students are in a cohort?

Refund policies vary a lot. In our sample:

  • Down Under School of Yoga: trainings are "final sale."
  • Yoga District: no refunds, though it may offer account credit.
  • Citizen Yoga: the balance (minus the $500 deposit) is waived or refunded if you withdraw before the start date. After that, you owe full tuition.
  • Trailside Yoga's 300-hour: a prorated refund before the halfway point, then nothing.
  • Yoga Shanti's 300-hour: a refund minus a $400 fee before a set date, then credit toward a future training only.
  • YogaRenew: a full refund within 30 days.

Red flags:

  • No refund policy anywhere in writing, or pressure to pay in full immediately
  • Countdown "sales" that seem to reset
  • Lead trainers you can't identify or verify
  • Vague answers about live versus recorded hours
  • Promises of guaranteed jobs or income
  • Claims that the training lets you treat injuries or medical conditions. Yoga Alliance's scope of practice says members "must not provide advice or services for which they are not properly and currently licensed" (Yoga Alliance).

Find a program

Our teacher training directory lists 24 US programs, including the schools priced in this guide. Each listing was checked against the school's official page on October 14, 2026, with the regular tuition, format and whether the school says it's a Yoga Alliance registered school. Listings aren't paid placements, and none is marked "Verified" until we've confirmed details with the school directly. You can browse by state or start with the online programs. Always confirm current dates and prices with the school before you pay a deposit.

Paying for it

  • Early-bird pricing saved $150 to $1,000 in our sample. Yoga District's earliest tier was $1,000 under its regular price.
  • Payment plans were common. Day Yoga charges $200 more for its monthly plan, and some plans require you to keep paying even if you withdraw, so read the terms.
  • Scholarships and work-study. Kripalu offers limited scholarships covering 50% of on-campus costs, 40% for hybrid, and 30% of online tuition. Citizen Yoga offers inclusion scholarships, and The Yoga Common offers one full scholarship for a BIPOC trainee. Yoga District's work-study rate is $1,900 in exchange for volunteer hours.
  • Studio membership tie-ins. Some discounts require you to keep a paid membership. Citizen Yoga's member rate, for example, requires six more months of membership after training.

Earnings: a reality check

The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't track yoga teachers separately. They fall under "fitness trainers and instructors," a group that also includes personal trainers and group fitness instructors. For that group:

  • The median annual wage was $47,160 in May 2025, or $22.67 an hour.
  • The lowest 10% earned less than $28,800, and the highest 10% more than $83,100.
  • "Many fitness trainers and instructors work variable or part-time schedules that may include nights, weekends, or holidays."
  • Employment is projected to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035.

Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified August 27, 2026.

For scale: at the median hourly wage, $3,000 in tuition equals about 132 paid hours. Many people take a training only to deepen their own practice, which is a reasonable choice. If your goal is income, ask studio owners near you what they pay and whether they're hiring before you enroll.

A.In a sample of nine US programs we checked on October 14, 2026, regular tuition at local studios ran about $3,000 to $3,900, with early-bird prices as low as $2,200. A self-paced online program was listed at $1,637 but on sale for $347. Residential programs that include lodging ran from $2,400 to $5,400. Yoga Alliance's own training page says schools set tuition 'ranging from $1,500 to $5,000+.'
A.As of October 14, 2026, a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) pays a one-time, non-refundable $50 application fee and $65 a year in membership dues, for $115 the first year. Upgrading to a higher designation later is a one-time $50 fee. Yoga Alliance has announced credential changes starting in January 2027, including an assessment, and says current rates are held through the 2029 renewal.
A.Yoga Alliance calls the RYT a credential, not a license, and its pages we checked don't say registration is required to teach. Whether you need it depends on where you want to work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says employers usually prefer certification, 'but requirements vary by facility.' Many studios ask for an RYT 200 in job postings.
A.Yes. Yoga Alliance's standards for schools say Registered Yoga Schools can offer training '100% in-person, 100% distance learning, or a mix of both.' At least 15% of program hours must be live (synchronous), which is 30 hours of a 200-hour training and 45 hours of a 300-hour training.
A.In the five 300-hour programs we checked on October 14, 2026, live programs (in person, online, or both) ran $3,500 to $4,500 before discounts. One self-paced online program was listed at $1,749 and on sale for $444. You need a 200-hour training first.
A.Common extras are required books, required studio classes, application fees, card processing fees, travel and lodging for immersions or retreats, liability insurance, CPR certification if an employer requires it, and Yoga Alliance fees. Check each program's list of what's included before you pay a deposit.
A.The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't publish a figure for yoga teachers alone. For the broader group 'fitness trainers and instructors,' the median annual wage was $47,160 in May 2025, or $22.67 an hour. The BLS notes many in this field work part-time or variable schedules.
