Planetary periods

Dasha calculator

Dashas are the timing system of Vedic astrology. Your Moon's nakshatra at birth sets which planetary period you were born into and how much of it remained; every later period follows from that in a fixed order.

How Vimshottari Dasha works

The 120-year Vimshottari cycle runs through nine planets in the order Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury, for 7, 20, 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19 and 17 years. The lord of your Moon's nakshatra rules your first period, and the part of the nakshatra the Moon had already crossed is the part of that period already spent.

Mahadasha, Antardasha and deeper levels

Each major period (Mahadasha) divides into nine sub-periods (Antardashas) in the same order, starting with its own lord, and each of those divides again (Pratyantardasha). The report shows five levels for the current moment.

Other dasha systems

Tradition also uses Yogini Dasha (a 36-year cycle), Ashtottari Dasha (108 years, applicable to some charts only) and Jaimini Chara Dasha, which runs through signs rather than planets. The report calculates each with its documented rules and says when a system is classically applicable.

Why calculators sometimes differ

Dasha dates depend on the ayanamsha and on the length of the dasha year (we use 365.25 days). A small difference in either can shift dates by days or weeks; the report lists the exact settings used.

Frequently asked questions

Which Mahadasha am I running now?

Enter your birth details and the report shows your current Mahadasha, Antardasha and deeper sub-periods with their start and end dates, plus the dasha balance at birth.

Does a dasha change guarantee a life event?

No. Tradition reads dasha periods as windows when certain themes come forward. The report expresses timing as periods with a confidence level, never as certain events.

What if my birth time is approximate?

Mahadasha dates depend on the Moon, which moves about half a degree an hour, so they shift only slightly. Deep sub-periods are more sensitive, and the report flags this.
