Surya Mudra (Surya Mudra)
A hand position in which the ring finger folds to the base of the thumb and the thumb rests over it, while the other three fingers stay extended.
Surya Mudra is a seated hand position. Fold your ring finger toward the base of your thumb, rest the thumb lightly over it, and keep the other fingers extended. Hold it for a few minutes while breathing slowly. Claims that it aids weight loss or metabolism are unproven. With finger arthritis, keep the press very light.

What is Surya Mudra?
Surya Mudra is a hand position in which the ring finger folds down toward the base of the thumb and the thumb rests lightly over it, while the index, middle and little fingers stay extended. Surya is Sanskrit for the sun, and the gesture is also called Agni (fire) Mudra in some books.
It belongs to a modern system of finger mudras in which each finger is linked to an element. In that system the ring finger stands for earth and the thumb for fire, so folding the ring finger under the thumb is said to reduce earth and increase fire. Descriptions vary between sources: some lists use this folded-finger form for Prithvi Mudra instead, and some describe Surya Mudra with the ring fingertip touching the thumb tip. If your teacher shows a different version, follow it.
In practice, Surya Mudra is held with both hands resting palms up on the knees or thighs during seated breathing or meditation, usually for a few minutes.
Surya Mudra is widely promoted for weight loss, boosting metabolism, lowering cholesterol, and helping with diabetes. These are traditional beliefs, not established effects. A 2018 review of yoga for type 2 diabetes listed Surya Mudra among the mudras said to help with diabetes and noted that their individual effects have not been evaluated in scientific studies. A hand position is not a substitute for treatment or for changes your doctor recommends. Its honest use is as a specific gesture to hold while you sit and breathe.
Step-by-step instructions
- Sit upright on a cushion or chair with your shoulders relaxed.
- Rest the backs of your hands on your knees or thighs, palms up.
- Fold your ring finger toward the base of your thumb.
- Rest your thumb lightly over the folded ring finger.
- Keep your index, middle and little fingers extended and relaxed.
- Breathe slowly for a few minutes, then release and stretch your fingers.
Tips & modifications
- Beginner: The ring finger is the least independent finger, so the little finger may want to fold with it. Let it bend slightly if that is more comfortable.
- Common mistake: Pressing hard with the thumb. The thumb rests on the finger; it doesn't push.
- Easier or harder: If folding the ring finger is uncomfortable, touch its tip to the thumb tip instead.
- Safety: Stop and stretch the fingers open if a knuckle aches.
Safety
If you have any of the contraindications listed above, or a health condition, talk to your doctor before practicing. Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, or numbness. Use props and modifications as needed, especially if you are 50+ or new to yoga.
