About Geeta Iyengar

When we talk about the evolution of modern yoga, particularly for women, one name stands out with quiet yet immense strength: Geeta Iyengar. As the eldest daughter of the legendary B.K.S. Iyengar, she not only inherited a legacy but shaped it into her own powerful contribution to the world.

The Daughter of a Master, a Master Herself

Born in 1944, Geeta Iyengar grew up immersed in the disciplined practice of Iyengar Yoga. But her path wasn’t simply one of inheritance—it was of deep personal commitment, study, and innovation. While her father revolutionized how yoga was taught globally, Geeta became a pioneer in applying yogic principles to women’s health and well-being.

She was one of the first teachers to speak and write extensively about how yoga should be adapted to a woman’s changing body—through menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, and beyond. Her groundbreaking book, "Yoga: A Gem for Women," is still considered a definitive guide for female practitioners worldwide.

A Legacy of Precision and Compassion

Geeta Iyengar’s teaching style mirrored the Iyengar tradition—precise, methodical, and deeply focused on alignment. But students who practiced under her also recall her compassion, clarity, and deep understanding of the human body and mind. She believed in discipline, but she taught with heart.

What made her unique was her blend of scientific knowledge, spiritual depth, and practical experience. She didn’t just teach poses; she taught awareness, encouraging students to explore their inner strength and silence.

A Life Devoted to Service

Even after her father's passing, Geeta continued to teach at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India, training generations of teachers from across the globe. Despite health challenges, she remained deeply committed to her students and her practice until her passing in December 2018, just days after commemorating her father’s birth centenary.

An Inspiration to All

Geeta Iyengar broke boundaries—not with loud declarations, but through unwavering dedication. She opened the doors of yoga wider for women, showing that it was not only a path to physical health but to self-discovery, resilience, and spiritual strength.

Her legacy continues to guide yoga teachers and students alike, proving that teaching is not just about knowledge—it’s about living the truth of what you teach.

“A yogini in every sense, Geeta Iyengar lived her practice. And in doing so, she transformed the lives of countless others.”
